The Regional Museum of Jagodina celebrated Museum Day on September 30, when our institution was founded in 1954 at the initiative of Dušan Duja Vukićević, a professor of history. Vukićević was the first director of The Regional Museum, and he led it through the most demanding period. The initial years of the Museum’s work were marked by difficulties. The affirmation of museum activities among the public was slow, awareness of the need to preserve heritage was not developed, and providing adequate space and working conditions was a major problem. Vukićević, through his commitment and constant attempts to affirm museum activities, popularized the Museum as a cultural institution, museology as a humanistic discipline, and pointed out the need to preserve cultural heritage. His hard work, enthusiasm and perseverance laid the foundations of museum activity in Jagodina.

On the day our museum was founded, we also remember Duja’s cousin, Nenad Vukićević, with whose support the Museum managed to create its own website, the only fully bilingual online presentation of a museum in Serbia, making our work visible worldwide and information about our collections accessible to everyone.

Rich and significant collections, as well as the decades-long work of generations of museum curators on collecting, researching, presenting and educating, have secured a prominent place for the Regional museum of Jagodina in the field of cultural heritage protection, and for Jagodina recognition on the cultural map of Serbia and the Balkans.

On the occasion of Museum Day, we award certificates of appreciation to all donors and collaborators who have helped us in the past year in the work of collecting, processing and presenting our cultural heritage. This year, the recipients of the certificates of appreciation are: Biljana Marković, Anica Teofilović, Božana Vučković, Ninoslav Stanojlović, Stefan Kostić, Vladan Dimitrijević, Mile Stojanović and Mina Stefanović as donors.

For the loan of paintings for the exhibition by Ilija Vukićević, we awarded certificates of appreciation to: Vladimir Milanović, Štefanija Vukićević, Igor Rupnik, Milan Radosavljević, Milica Komarek and Dušica and Tomislav Milačić, while for many years of cooperation and contribution to the enrichment of the collections of the Regional Museum, a certificate of appreciation was presented to Rade Milosavljević.

This year, the recipient of The Regional Museum of Jagodina Charter is Predrag Antić, the benefactor of the postcard collection of Jagodina’s postal history. The charter will be presented on Friday, October 3rd at the “Hil” hotel in Jagodina, when the collection will be officially handed over and the contract signed.

On behalf of the founder of the Regional Museum, Miodrag Jarkin, President of the Jagodina City Assembly, addressed the attendees, and the ceremony was also attended by Dalibor Marković, member of the City Council, and Goran Milosavljević, Head of the Pomoravlje District. The director of the Regional Museum of Jagodina expressed special thanks to the representatives of the city government in his speech, and the support of the Ministry of Culture was also highlighted, thanks to which our museum has maintained continuity in its publishing activities, which stand out for their quality content but also for their visual identity.

The City Mixed Choir “Ramonda” performed at the Museum Day ceremony, conducted by Srđan Petrović.

The Regional Museum of Jagodina would like to thank all donors and collaborators who have helped us in our work to preserve and protect cultural heritage over the past year.
