By the resolution of the United Nations General Council, 2022 was declared the International Year of Glass (IYOG22). The year will celebrate the essential role glass has in Society. The expert group for glass of ICOM National Committee Serbia has launched an initiative to mark the International Year of Glass in our country. A large number of national institutions and experts, including our museum, joined the activities marking this event.
The territory of the City of Jagodina is the cradle of national production and industrialization of glass in renewed Serbia, because here, on the location between the villages Mišević and Belica, Avram Petronijević, an important figure of Serbian history in the first half of the 19th century, founded the first Serbian glasshouse in 1846. Therefore, the Regional Museum of Jagodina joins the celebration of the International Year of Glass with the exhibition “Birth of Glassmaking in Serbia”, which will present glass from museum collections from late antiquity to the mid-20th century, with special emphasis on glass produced in glasshouses in Jagodina. This exhibition will be officially opened on May 12 as the central event of the manifestation “Museums for 10”.
In the next month, we will organize two virtual exhibitions that will be available on our website. The first will be dedicated to the glass from the archaeological collections of the Museum, and the second to the products of the Jagodina glasshouse of Nacko Janković, which worked in the period from the beginning of the 1980s to the beginning of the 20th century.
We also invite you to follow our Blog, where we will publish several texts about the work of the first glass factory of Avram Petronijević and present some interesting items from our glass collection.
